What Is a Crypto Payment Gateway? A Product Guide
A crypto payment gateway is the layer between a merchant product and a customer's blockchain transfer. It turns an amount and business reference into a payment request, presents the instructions, observes the transaction, and returns a status that the merchant system can use.
The four jobs of a payment gateway
First, the gateway creates a payment from information supplied by the merchant. Second, it gives the customer a checkout with the amount and wallet instructions. Third, it monitors the relevant blockchain activity. Fourth, it reports a status the merchant backend can use.
These jobs sound simple, but keeping them together is what prevents operations teams from reconciling raw wallet activity against a spreadsheet of orders.
- Payment creation and merchant reference
- Customer-facing checkout
- Transaction detection and confirmation
- Webhook or API payment status
Gateway versus wallet
A wallet helps a person or business control keys and initiate blockchain transactions. A gateway focuses on the commercial payment flow around a transaction. The two products may interact, but they solve different problems.
A merchant evaluating a gateway should ask how settlement is arranged, which party controls addresses, and what operational responsibilities remain with the merchant.
Gateway versus payment processor
In traditional payments, a processor may move through card networks and banking rails. A crypto gateway observes blockchain transfers and supplies business context around them. Commercial terms and custody models vary, so the product label alone is not enough to determine how funds are handled.
What to evaluate before integrating
Start with the assets and networks your actual customers use. Then evaluate checkout clarity, API ergonomics, webhook behavior, underpayment or expiry rules, operational reporting, support processes, and the way the provider handles onboarding.
- Supported asset and network combinations
- Payment state model and webhook retries
- White-label or hosted checkout options
- Settlement and custody design
- Refund and support workflow
- Security and compliance responsibilities
